Avalanche in French Alps Leaves at Least 1 Dead

At least one child was killed and several others missing after an avalanche hit a school group in the French Alps Wednesday, police said.

The group of nine students and their teacher had been skiing in the Les Deux Alpes area on a closed piste, Le Dauphine reported.

Among the injured, two were said to have suffered cardiac arrest while another was described as seriously hurt. The teacher was found unconscious.

Newspaper De Martin reports the school group were from the city of Lyon.

The latest on the avalanche that has struck in the French Alps.

Police say a search and rescue squad is on the scene, searching with dogs and a helicopter.

Authorities in the Alps have called on those practicing winter sports to take the necessary precautions so as not to put their lives in danger.
