Avalanche warning issued in Jammu and Kashmir after heavy snowfall

Several other roads including Jammu-Poonch and Doda-Kishtwar road have also been blocked owing to the snowfall. An official in the local Meterological department said the weather was likely to improve from Friday afternoon.

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed to traffic on Friday following fresh snowfall and landslides in the region, officials said. Also, about 100 passenger vehicles are stranded between Banihal and Ramsu.

While Srinagar witnessed 15 mm of rain and snow during the day, the highest snowfall was recorded in tourist destination Gulmarg where 40 cm of snow was received till 1730 hours.

Deputy Commissioner Shopian said the administration is striving to restore the electricity and road connectivity in district’s far flung areas and upper reaches.

Due to slippery roads, vehicular movement on the Srinagar-Jammu highway was stopped.

“Trikuta Hills in the Jammu region also received light snowfall during the night”.

The highway was closed yesterday due to snowfall at Jawahar tunnel and Patnitop areas en route.

The Meteorological Department here has forecast wet weather for the next two days.

The snowfall has caused a sudden dip in the temperatures with Ladakh region, Leh town recorded minus 4.2 while Kargil town recorded minus 4.0 as the minimum temperature on Thursday.

He said with minus 4.5 degrees Celsius as the night’s lowest temperature, Gulmarg Ski resort was the coldest in the Valley.

The resort was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir, the official said. “It is snowing”, he said.

The north Kashmir town of Kupwara recorded a minimum of 0.9 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag town, in south, registered a minimum of 1.3 degrees Celsius.
