The average cost for a full Thanksgiving meal for 10 is $50.11, a 70-cent increase from last year’s average of $49.41.

“Even with reduced supplies of turkey due to last spring’s avian influenza outbreak and the historically high wholesale turkey prices that followed, grocers and restaurants are reluctant to pass those increases on to consumers”, said Casey Langan, Wisconsin Farm Bureau’s spokesman.

AFBF deputy chief economist John Anderson compares that to last year’s turkey dinner. They are allowed to take advantage of advertised specials, excluding discount coupons and purchase requirements.

This year, however, is the first time when the average cost of a Thanksgiving dinner has gone over $50 in the last four years.

The annual survey has consistently shown the affordability of food and the stability of the production system for the past 30 years, Anderson said.

“It’s easy to forget the true value of our farmers and ranchers, who in some cases are only making pennies to the dollar on the goods we buy at our local supermarket, he said”. Let us give thanks once again for our many farmers. The American Farm Bureau Federation said the cost of a 16-pound turkey is up more than six-percent from past year to just over $23. Though unscientific, the survey is meant to be a snapshot of actual prices across Arkansas and the nation.

Despite fears about spikes in turkey prices after an avian flu outbreak and a shortage of pumpkin, prices and supplies remain stable, the American Farm Bureau noted.
