Avril Lavigne debuts new single at Special Olympics ceremony

Avril Lavigne appeared to be feeling as free as a bird during her first on-stage performance since revealing her battle with Lyme disease.

Avril Lavigne performed for the first time in almost a year at the Special Olympics World Games’ opening ceremony in Los Angeles. In a series of flu-like symptoms, doctors had trouble putting a proper name to her illness.

“I just sang FLY on stage for the FIRST time ALL THE WAY THROUGH live tonight in rehearsal”, she wrote.

The “Girlfriend” hit-maker also shared a photo of herself singing in an embellished black Alice + Olivia gown on Instagram and captioned it, “Honored to have performed my song Fly at the opening ceremony for the Special Olympics tonight”.

The illness left Lavigne bedridden for five months as she recovered from the infection, which she believes she caught from a tick bite last spring.

“I’m about halfway through my treatment”, Lavigne said in June of this year.

“Thank you for having me and please enjoy my song “Fly”. “I’m doing a lot better”.

According to Lavigne, she wrote the song as encouragement to people who are facing challenges, to encourage strength and to empower.

She went on to thank those who supported her through her struggle and who also donated to her foundation.
