“They said you could win with dragons”, the show’s co-creator, D.B. Weiss, said Sunday in the press room after winning the Emmy.

Netflix is in the running in the same category for “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt“. Other African-American actresses who prevailed Sunday were Uzo Aduba and Regina King, who won for supporting performances.

Veep and Game of Thrones were heavy favorites in each of the Comedy and Drama categories, and they definitely cleaned up! It was the first time a Mad Men performer had ever won an acting Emmy, and it was Hamm’s first win after 16 nominations.

Combined with the treasure horde of eight awards previously bestowed during the Creative Arts Emmys, the series broke the show’s previous record of nine won by “The West Wing” in 2000.

Game of Thrones also earned the honors for Outstanding Writing and Directing for a Drama Series, while show standout Peter Dinklage won the Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

The 44-year-old star portrayed the iconic advertising executive Don Draper in the drama series, which ended earlier this year, and this was his last chance to claim the gong for the role.

Serendipitously, today is George R.R. Martin’s 67th birthday.

Fantasy drama Game of Thrones and Washington political comedy Veep won the top prizes at the 2015 Emmy Awards, toppling old favourites Mad Men and Modern Family. Co-star Tony Hale won his second Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy.

Veep’s creator, Armando Ianucci, was the only British nominee to win, with others including Mark Rylance, who was nominated for Wolf Hall, going home empty-handed.

“To everybody on television, I just want to tell you, cling to it as long as you can”, joked Stewart, who’s turning over “Daily Show” to Trevor Noah.

The positive surprises – and not too surprising given the competition – were the wins for best actor (Jeffrey Tambor) and best director (Jill Soloway) for Transparent, the online streaming series about a man who transitions into a woman.

He went on to say: “Not to repeat myself, but to specifically repeat myself, I’d like to dedicate myself and this award to the transgender community”.

She said: “We are all here because of the power of a story well told and sometimes that is enough”. She also thanked the makeup artist who gave her “this sort of smoky eye”. “Thank you so much – you will never have to see me again!”

The latter picked up six awards, including best mini-series, best lead actor in a mini-series or movie (Richard Jenkins), lead actress (Frances McDormand) and supporting actor (Bill Murray).

And Inside Amy Schumer was named best variety sketch series.

Since its first season in 2011, the globally popular series has been in the outstanding drama race at the Emmys but failed to taste success until this time.
