AWS offers Database Migration Service

Supporters of the rumor say that Apple, which already uses AWS as well as Azure, is looking to diversify the portfolio of companies providing it with cloud services.

The AWS Database Migration Service monitors the progress of replication and migration, notifies customers of any network or host failures, and automatically provisions a host replacement in the event of a failure. Customers can use the service to perform one-time migrations, or they can maintain continuous replication between databases without having to install or configure any complex software. Many of these customers also used the AWS Schema Conversion Tool to switch database engines.

Amazon Web Services is trying to make database migration less of a chore with its new AWS Database Migration Service. Once the migration process begins, AWS manages every complication that arises during the process, including automatically replicating data changes that may occur in the source database. Available now, the new release allows IT organizations to execute big data and data integration projects running on AWS Redshift or AWS Elastic Map Reduce (EMR) with fewer resources and at a reduced cost. Adding more to the deal, AWS has also assured its customers that there will be very little downtime through the entire process. Apple has never confirmed the cloud services that power iCloud, but past rumors have pointed towards AWS and Microsoft Azure, suggesting Apple will continue using multiple services to meet its needs.

The AWS Database Migration Service is available now from Amazon’s US Regions; from the EU Ireland and Frankfurt Regions; and from the Asia Pacific.

In a related news, AWS celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this week. “The AWS Database Migration Service will be a key enabler for our plans to migrate more databases to Amazon Aurora in 2016”, said Wald. The company which came into existence as a side venture of the American eCommerce heavyweight has so far made a rather enviable progress by taking on over 1 million active customers across 190 countries.
