Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: ‘Death to America’ chant refers to policies

Almost 35 years ago, Iranian terrorists took over the American embassy in Iran’s capital city.

In another speech commemorating the anniversary, Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) naval commander Admiral Ali Fadavi stressed that Iran’s struggle with the United States would continue until the very end, because it was a struggle between justice and falsehood, Fars News Agency reported.

The Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared today a national holiday, the national day to fight against global arrogance. In October, ministers from defense, industry and welfare sent a public letter to President Hassan Rouhani, warning him that current circumstances could lead to an economic crisis.

“The aim of the slogan means death to US policies and arrogance”, the supreme leader told a group of students of the phrase, widely chanted at rallies and at mosques after Friday prayers.

“This slogan that is chanted is not a slogan against the American people”.

Mr Saharkhiz was released in 2013 after serving three years in prison for insulting Ayatollah Khamenei. “The Iranians sitting inside of Tehran think, ‘Oh, the Americans just want to walk in and overthrow us”‘. As United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, told Congress last week in a briefing I attended, Iran uses these vague national security related “crimes” to charge anyone it wishes to abuse their human rights.

Even facsimiles of American culture are targeted, as demonstrators Wednesday carried signs that said no to USA fast-food chains like McDonald’s or Starbucks setting up franchises in the country. “A few naïve people may believe this story, but the US’ unflinching support for and incessant aid to the criminal, butcher-like and murderous Zionist regime and their support for the crimes committed against people in Yemen lay bare the reality of that claim and those tears”. The students held the hostages for 444 days, and the two countries have had no diplomatic relations since then.

The hard-liners fear Rouhani’s efforts to improve relations will pave the way for the United States to undermine and eventually dismantle the Islamic republic formed after the 1979 revolution. “For this reason, they are targeting these beliefs with new tools, but pupils, university students and all our youths will neutralize this ruse”.

Criticism of the U.S. plays a prominent role on the Ayatollah’s Twitter account, which after announcement of the Iran deal posted a picture of Barack Obama with a gun to his head.

Although many politicians deride the call for destruction of America, Iran’s supreme leader doesn’t get what all of the fuss is about. Deliberately said, but this reaction is not the usual label to a country after getting a deal of lifting worldwide sanctions.

“We’re not going to react to every comment by an Iranian leader”, Trudeau added.
