B1G ground gained, but SEC still reigned in National Football League draft

The skyline displayed the words “Draft Town”, “NFL”, “On the clock” and “Da Draft”, while the Buckingham fountain changed colors for each team on the clock.

After the SEC had zero quarterbacks taken in the 2015 National Football League draft, only two were drafted in 2016 and neither heard their name called until the third day.

Every year there are winners and losers in the draft and some years we can visibly see who they are from the day the event goes final. The SEC also had a record 63 players drafted in 2013.

While many analysts will nitpick this as an “end of the SEC dominance” – much like FSU snapping the conference’s seven-year national title streak in the 2014 BCS Championship Game – the streak itself speaks volumes regarding how great the talent level is in the SEC.

How accurate are mock drafts that look a year into the future? Last year, such drafts were having the Browns taking either Connor Cook, Cardale Jones, or Christian Hackenberg at the top of the draft.

Laquon Treadwell was one of three Ole Miss players selected in the first round.

Simple logic might suggest these players made graves mistakes in declaring early, but (at least in my opinion) that is far from the truth, especially considering nearly all of their situations.

Alabama will be back next year and the SEC isn’t going anywhere.

In the last seven years, Ohio State has 39 overall draft picks, eight first-rounders and 20 in the first rounds. But NFL Draft weekend is another part of the calendar where the Big Ten may grow to be more competitive.
