Back in the past with Nehru on Children’s day

Addressing a packed auditorium of Congress workers at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Stadium during the concluding ceremony of the 125th birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, both Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi targeted the prime minister “for having failed to ensure freedom of expression to academicians, intellectuals and artists”. “It would interest you to learn that the very first president of the Sahitya Akademi was none other than Nehru who in his opening address at the Akademi said his first duty as president… was to protect the Akademi from the interference of the Prime Minister”. The reason of celebrating his birthday as children’s day is because of his love and passion for children. As a tribute to this great man who gifted the younger generations of the nation with the Democracy and remembering his love for the children, the birthday of the former prime minister of the nation is celebrated as children’s day.

Sonia’s remarks came a day after Modi, who is visiting the United Kingdom, reiterated that India was tolerant.
