Bad Moms review — Kathryn Hahn reveals standout comedic chops

The montages are where this movie finds one of a few footholds. It’s just too easy not to think up punny headlines.

Long before Martha Stewart offers a tray of Lingonberry Jello shots, you’re thirsty for what the ladies of Bad Moms are drinking. But I won’t hold that against it, because Bad Moms also might provide the most consistent laughs of any comedy this summer. They trash a supermarket store and decide to go wild.

Bad Moms a movie for all those mothers who want to say “You Know What” Screw It. But the life she’s leading on screen and the things she’s complaining about don’t line up in this movie. My younger sister Jamie, a single mother of a daughter about to start kindergarten, said, “I found it to be depressing at times, but mostly because it resonated with my own single motherhood”. She’s a Good Mom, sprint-tippytoeing from meetings to soccer games on stiletto heels and driving so recklessly she should star in the next Fast and Furious.

But she’s not good enough for anyone: her husband, her whiplash moody kids, and most of all her school’s Queen Bee Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate, unblinking and deadly), a bless-her-heart suburban tyrant who coats her threats in organic Stevia. “So, I went on Etsy and I was like, ‘$90?’ I was like, ‘Buy now!’ Ashton’s was $100, so technically his wedding band was a little bit more expensive”. That’s a movie I’m damn sure I would have loved.

First we get their “rebellion” and as per usual, we get the classic slow-motion acts of ridiculous behavior which was cliché 20 years ago. “I really do believe you know when your family is complete”.

The soundtrack was unbelievable, and really added to the fun vibe of the movie. But instead the movie’s as tame and uninspired as a 90s sitcom. While trying to balance raunchy humor and unearned sentimentality without any authentic characters, the movie proves to be bland and uninteresting, when not simply unpleasant. An example of that would be Amy and Mike’s marriage. There are parts of Bad Moms that work to a tee at delivering on the hysterical premise. The movie is on the defense before it even gets going. Like the main character Amy, each mom out there is trying her best while praying that others aren’t scrutinizing every parental move she makes. To make a movie which appeals and identifies with female audiences, the women don’t need to be ideal or faultless (they shouldn’t be); they need to be identifiable.

Bad Moms is all set to release on 29 July 2016.

Christina Applegate plays a clear cut villain in this movie and was one of its greatest strengths. He got me a attractive engagement ring. Except for the fact that, oh yeah, they’ve got millions in the bank. Hey, you know who could have given them one, Annie Mumolo, the co-writer of Bridesmaids. It’s bad because it’s so completely obvious that it’s written by two men who don’t seem to understand the women they’re writing about (and for).
