Badgers prepare for Big Ten opener against Iowa

“When you’d watch C.J. play, you could see that he has all the intangibles to be a successful college quarterback”. There’s no doubt that Wisconsin is going to want to continue to pound the football against Iowa this week as the two schools play for the Heartland Trophy.

This is the big one this week. Why Wisconsin Will Win The Iowa ground attack isn’t going to work, either. The Hawkeyes are putting up 37.8 points per game so far while allowing just 17.8 points per contest. That is pretty good. Iowa has scored on 15-of-16 trips to the red zone (14 TDs, 1 FG).

Perhaps the most noticeable difference this season in the two programs when compared to years past is the growth of each team’s starting quarterback. Iowa and Navy are only teams that have yet to allow a rushing touchdown…. Since that loss, the Badgers have outscored their three opponents, 114-3. Iowa can’t afford to do anything like that tomorrow. Toughing it out, he and the other players knew their responsibilities after preparing all week. On the ground, Taiwan Deal rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns in 26 attempts while Dare Ogunbowale added 85 yards and one touchdown in 15 attempts.

The need to run it became apparent late in the game. Deal helped the Badgers gain a season-high 512 yards of total offense, including 326 rushing yards.

As a sophomore, Beathard played in nine games, including one start in a 24-10 road win at Purdue.

On defense, Iowa played very well. Stave is having a renaissance in his senior season, completing 66.1 percent of his passes for 830 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He had an 88-yard run that set up a field goal. Thankfully, there is no Gordon this year, and Wisconsin’s big-play potential has gone way down.

Deal capped the Badgers’ longest scoring drive of the season of 97 yards on the opening drive with a 2-yard plunge. Their explosiveness statistic (via Football Study Hall’s advanced stats) is 118th in the country. Iowa won 62-16.

“It just seems that this year; we’ve really put a lot of emphasis on changing the culture here at Iowa”. “At the time he still hadn’t told Jake, so I was a bit shocked, but excited at the same time”. They lack risky skill position players in the passing game. “But I think there are a few real common denominators”.

For Rudolph, it’s about maintaining that level of ball security, while also seeing strides in the other areas where they’ve struggled, like hitting on big plays. The Badgers have Rutgers and Maryland in crossover games and both programs are a mess right now. How Beathard handles that may determine the game. “So we all wanted to outside release to get our guys to turn and just kind of run as fast as we could to get our guys’ hips turned”. No. 2 back LeShun Daniels Jr has 217 yards on 48 carries but has not scored a TD.

And on defense and special teams, it is the Desmond King show. He’s averaged over 48 yards per punt this season and 45.4 for his career.

“If you score at the end, it’s good”.

Coming off its first conference win against then-No. It has been a slow move to a more aggressive Kirk Ferentz over the past 3 or 4 years; the big difference this year is that it’s working.
