Bahrain Pulls Ambassador to Iran After ‘Explosive Discovery’

The cache included a tonne and a half of C4 explosives and other explosive material, as well as automatic rifles, pistols, and hand grenades, according to the ministry.

It added an unspecified number of people, with alleged ties to Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, had been arrested, and that the chemical composition of the seized materials was similar to traces of explosives found in recent attacks on police in the country. The Sunni-ruled kingdom, which has faced four years of unrest from Shiite activists demanding more political freedom, often accuses Iran of meddling in its internal affairs.

“This significant discovery marks yet another disturbing incident in which relentless Iranian actions are attempting to undermine security and stability within Bahrain and the wider region”, said the statement. “The sophistication of terrorist-related incidents in Bahrain has increased markedly during 2015, and the professionalism with which these materials are manufactured, concealed and deployed is a clear indication of global support and sponsorship”.

The explosives found on Wednesday were enough to destroy the Bahraini capital Manama, state-run media reported the Gulf country’s foreign minister as saying earlier Thursday.

Iran has denied any involvement in violence in Bahrain.

In July, a bombing killed two police officers and wounded six in Sitra, south of Manama.

In August, the Bahraini Interior Ministry arrested five individuals suspected of conducting a bomb attack in Bahrain.

Bahrain recalled its ambassador from Iran and ordered Tehran's envoy to leave within 72 hours
