Balancing act for Trump running mate Pence amid Muslim soldier row

Pence, who an aide said has had “a good, longstanding relationship” with McCain, initiated the meeting with him in Phoenix prior to the release of Trump’s remarks on Tuesday.

The downtown Phoenix event also was marred when a man in the back of the crowd shouted out “Donald Trump is a racist” several times.

The differences between Trump and Pence are clear at Pence’s events.

Underpinning the dynamic, the sources said, is that Trump’s team feels that Pence is loyal and doesn’t have his own agenda. But they turned against her when she asked the following question: “Time and time again Trump has disrespected our nation’s armed forces and veterans – and his disrespect for Mr. Khan and his family is just an example of that”, Byrne said.

As the crowd became louder, Pence called for calm and quiet.

“Let’s demand the media listen to and honour all of the families of the fallen in this country”, he said. “We honor him and his family… we cherish his family”.

Governor Pence’s defense of Trump could be indicative of his emerging role on the campaign trail: explaining and, at times, mitigating Trump’s incendiary comments.

Just how much credibility Pence can buy Trump – and for how long – is another question.

“You know my grandfather was an immigrant; he came through Ellis Island, Pence said”.

“We were kind of anxious about coming down here because of everything you see on TV and thought it might get a little hairy but it wasn’t”, he said “Everybody was very receptive”. He didn’t answer audience questions, and he made the event feel exclusive, worthy of Republicans and Trump supporters only.

Pence also said that Trump, the Republican nominee for president, would appoint U.S. Supreme Court justices who reflect the values of the late Antonin Scalia, who served on the court for 30 years before his death in February.

Donald Trump says there’s “great unity” in his campaign -despite growing dissent and turmoil among his fellow Republicans.

Graham was followed by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who dismissed what he said was criticism of Trump by the media. I can imagine that one of the few comforts afforded the mother of a soldier is the respect she should be able to expect from us regular, everyday citizens who benefit from her sacrifice.
