Balancing act: Simone Biles seeks 4th Rio gold

Who can forget South African swimmer Chad Le Clos posturing in front of USA swimmer Michael Phelps in the ready room right before the 200-meter butterfly semifinals on Monday? Biles could win an unprecedented five gold medals at the Rio Olympics if she sweeps her remaining events.

As Nathan Adrian touched the wall to finish off the victory, Phelps gathered the other relay swimmers, Ryan Murphy and Cody Miller, in his arms.

“When I made a decision to come back I wanted to do it the right way”, he said.

Phelps says he plans to keep swimming, but only for exercise. “This is the cherry that I wanted to put on the top of the cake”, Phelps told a press conference on Sunday. As more than one person said on social media, perhaps Le Clos should have kept his head down and focused more on himself than Phelps.

RIO DE JANEIRO-Swimmer Ryan Lochte and three of his USA teammates were robbed early Sunday morning after their taxi was stopped by “individuals posing as armed police officers”, a spokesman for the United States Olympic Committee said.

Phelps said he did not have numerous details on the incident yet, but added they he was back in his room at the Olympic Village, with his fiancée, Nicole Johnson, and their son, Boomer, at the time.

“Michael may not be competing anymore but he is still going to be very involved in the sport”, said team mate Ryan Murphy.

Baltimore’s own Michael Phelps has dominated the sport of swimming and the Olympic games for the past 12 years. “If this is the end that was a great way to cap off an incredible career”.

“Those tiny things. It’s wild to think that over 20 years ago, I learned to swim, and it’s all stopping, competition wise, in the next 48 hours”.

Joseph Schooling won first with a time of 50.39, faster than his idol’s best record.

Patrick Johnson, a two-time Olympian and the Australian record holder in the 100 metres, said athletes were now well aware of the shortcomings of anti-doping authorities and were voicing their frustration.

It wasn’t Phelps’ first close-run 100m fly gold. “It’s a nice number”.

The gold was Denmark’s third in swimming, and the first since 1948.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo, the 2012 Olympic champion from the Netherlands, finished sixth while Australia’s Campbell sisters Cate and Bronte again failed to win medals in an individual sprint.
