Baltimore rallies, defeats Tigers, 8

While Baltimore has won six of its last seven following a four-game skid, Detroit has dropped four of six and yielded 43 runs in that stretch.

The Mets finally landed the bat they were looking for in Yoenis Cespedes just ahead of Friday’s trade deadline, and Cole Hamels confirmed he blocked a trade to Houston before Philadelphia dealt its ace to Texas. Gose stole second and third and scored on a triple by Jose Iglesias.

The O’s would get another run in the next inning from Parades, who doubled to lead off the inning and scored after singles by Joseph and Machado.

It was the sixth win in seven games for the Orioles, who earlier in the day bolstered their roster for a playoff run by obtaining outfielder Gerardo Parra from Milwaukee before the non-waiver deadline. “But I think we’ve significantly improved the team over the last week or 10 days”. “That’s one thing; I’ve just kind of felt comfortable here this year,” Gausman said. He hit. 293 with 18 home runs and 61 RBIs in 102 games for the Tigers. He gave up five hits and no walks and had nine strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

Collins admitted he was “amped up” by all of the moves ownership authorized and GM Sandy Alderson pulled off – and didn’t – before the deadline. Dombrowski labeled the decision a “rebooting”, saying the Tigers have a solid foundation going forward.

Details of the deal remain to be determined, but the Detroit Free Press says Mets’ young gun Zack Wheeler will not go to the Tigers in the trade. He’s 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in his past four matchups with two of the last three taking place in Detroit, where he’s 2-8 with a 7.39 ERA in 10 starts. The third inning would see no runs, but the fourth gave the Orioles a couple more runs after a two run home run by Caleb Joseph (kid’s gotta eat!). Cespedes has hit more home runs this month (eight) than all of the Mets’ right-handed hitters combined (six).

Proper-hander Mychal Givens (1-Zero) earned his first main league victory for the Orioles with 1 2/three scoreless innings of aid. Rajai Davis had a base hit to right field and tried to hustle his way to second for a double. Marte made it 2-Zero with an RBI double within the second.

Despite the loss, Baltimore went 5-2 on a homestand that began with a sweep of the Atlanta Braves. With one out, Jimmy Paredes lined a single off the left leg of starter Buck Farmer, who limped around the mound after impact. But Martinez looked pretty good when he launched a pitch from Ubaldo Jimenez over the wall to straightaway center for a three-run home run in the top of the first inning.

Ian Krol followed, getting two outs and giving up two runs.

Their starting pitcher was hit hard, the offense offered little support and the team fell into an early hole that proved too difficult to overcome. “That seems to be the problem so far in our season”. I actually believe that in less than two years the Tigers will be competitive again. RHP Mike Wright was placed on the 15-day DL with a left calf strain, an injury that occurred Friday night.

Tigers’ highlights • There was some question whether Martinez would play after he left the game Saturday night with a left knee contusion.

Orioles: RHP Chris Tillman is nursing a sprained right ankle that might push back his start Monday in Oakland.

“I thought it was an outstanding first outing, ” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Norris has struggled with his control and has gone 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA with 12 walks and 23 hits allowed in 23.1 innings.
