Ban Ki-moon welcomes Narendra Modi-Nawaz Sharif meeting in Paris
Sitting beside Xi at the end of a long table, Obama said in remarks made before reporters that the partnership on climate discussions – despite a host of differences on issues including cybersecurity and military presence in the South China Sea – had been an essential part of the prelude to the global conference.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the meeting between Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi that took place on the margins of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris on Monday.
An MEA spokesperson described it as a brief exchange of courtesies in the Leaders Lounge.
Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif were among other world leaders who had gathered at the venue where the world climate summit was to be opened.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Monday said that Pakistan was committed to reduction of global emissions with various initiatives already taken like efforts for renewable technologies, energy efficiency, implementation of mass transport systems and expansion of hydro-electricity potential. Next, they took a seat beside each other on a couch.
“For that we must come together in a partnership to bring clean energy within the reach of all. Anything else would be morally wrong”, he wrote, adding: “Justice demands that, with what little carbon we can still safely burn, developing countries are allowed to grow”. “We would also need to ensure transparency in support provided to the developing countries”. He said his counterpart shared his keenness to end the current impasse in India-Pakistan bilateral engagement and to move towards resolving the outstanding issues between the two neighbours.
Modi is to launch a 122-country solar alliance with Hollande.
“Today, when the energy sources and excesses of our industrial age have put our planet in peril, the world must turn to Sun to power our future”.
India has rejected Pakistan’s offer to play in the UAE, while Pakistan says it will not play the series in India after several Pakistani nationals were threatened by Indian right-wing political party, Shiv Sena. Justin Trudeau, the new prime minister of Canada, sought to signal the about-face on climate policy that he represents from his predecessor, Stephen Harper, who had strongly opposed climate change policies.
“India should boycott bilateral talks with Pakistan unless the country stops sponsoring terrorists”.
