Bangladesh dismiss Proteas for 248 in first Test

After a dream ODI debut last month, teenaged paceman Mustafizur Rahman announced his test arrival by claiming three wickets in four balls as Bangladesh bowled out South Africa for 248 on the opening day of the first test on Sunday.

The hosts handed a test debut to teenage fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, who has impressed in the limited-overs format.

Temba Bavuma (54) attempted to mount a recovery for South Africa with a half-century, but he found little in the way of support and became Mustafizur’s fourth victim as their innings was ended for a surprisingly below-par score.

But now they must face the Proteas in two Tests, and if they have any hope of succeeding against the top-ranked side, who will care about this series far more than they did the LOIs, those teens-turned-leaders must fire from the start.

Bangladesh cricket coach Chandika Hathurusingha believes the biggest challenge for his side in the Test series against South Africa will be to counter their armoury of world class bowlers.

South Africa’s T20I captain played 122 balls and smashed five fours in his innings.

South Africa’s opening partnership was steady, crossing fifty in the 13th over.

Yesterday, Mustafiz missed out on a hat-trick for the third time recently but he informed that he was not disheartened.

Opener Stiaan Van Zyl scored 34 before he was caught behind attempting a leg glance off the bowling of part-time off-spinner Mahmudullah (1-9).

In the immediate next over, another left-arm spinner, Shakib Al Hasan, dismissed Du Plessis with a straighter delivery which trapped him.

Bangladesh openers, Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayess, then survived an over each from Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander to end day one on 7 for no loss.

It was a day filled with highlights for the Bangladeshis, who took advantage of a South African batting collapse.

To complete a memorable over, Quinton de Kock followed just two balls later, capping off a remarkable start to Rahman’s Test career.

“The Proteas are all about higher objective and we thought it would be a good opportunity to give back to the community, as well as connect for a worthwhile cause”, said Mohammed Moosajee, the Proteas’ team doctor.
