Bangladesh, Oman win in WT20 qualifiers

The second group game was supposed to see the boys in orange take on Oman, but bad weather intervened and prevented any play and therefore it ended Netherlands slim chances of qualifying.

Oman, which registered a surprise two-wicket win over Ireland in their opening match of qualifying round, is now looking to continue its winning run.

Munis Ansari, who has a bowling action similar to that of Lasith Malinga, was the pick of the bowlers for Oman as he picked up three wickets while conceding 37 runs in his 4 overs.

Bangladesh won the first game of the day, defending 153 against the Netherlands, and Ireland now know tomorrow’s game against the Tigers is, literally, win or bust. Mashrafe Morataza-led Bangladesh are favourites to top their group and move into the Super 10 stage of the 16-team event.

Bangladesh pace bowling coach Heath Streak said, “We won’t be taking Oman lightly.

But it did not prove too damaging as Sorensen, unable to grip the greasy ball due to heavy dew on the ground, bowled a high full toss that went through the legs of the wicketkeeper for four, sparking wild celebrations among the Oman players.

Ireland set a target of 155 and Oman successfully chased it. Oman needed 14 runs off 6 balls.

“Although a bit of it is being spent, the revenue should be spread more far out so that we have that opportunity to play more”.

“It’s a world competition, we want to be here and we want to be in the next round so it’s disappointing”.

The two teams have a history of fiercely fought contests, and put on a batting exhibition at the 2014 ICC World T20 in Bangladesh. However, Oman pulled the game back a bit and restricted the flow of easy runs, with none of the batsmen able to strike the ball cleanly enough. “We’ve got to win two games, but that is what it is… and we’re going to have to keep an eye on it”.

Oman vice-captain cum left-arm spinner Aamir Kaleem said to ESPN, “It is a win-win situation for us”.

After a wait of around half an hour, the match officials chose to abandon the match with both Bangladesh and Ireland getting one point each.

Bangladesh will look to Tamim Iqbal to maintain the excellent form that saw him strike 83 not out against Netherlands and 47 versus Ireland before rain arrived to prevent a result.
