Nine suspected Islamist militants were today killed and two others arrested by Bangladeshi police during a pre-dawn raid at their hideout here, officials said.

Police have arrested a number of militants in recent days in the hunt for those involved in a bloody attack on a Dhaka cafe on July 1 in which 22 people were killed, a lot of them foreigners.

One suspect was arrested following the police operation in the city’s Kalyanpur neighbourhood in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Masud Ahmed said.

On 1 July, five armed men entered the Holey Artisan Bakery in the diplomatic area and held people hostage for several hours. Nine alleged militants were said to have been killed at the spot. While the identities of the militants have not been confirmed yet, their clothes and other belongings suggested they were members of the JMB. Find us on Facebook too!

The police in Dhaka say that the militants were wearing turbans and had backpacks.

Bangladesh is reeling from a wave of deadly attacks by Islamist extremists.

The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has since launched a nationwide manhunt for Islamists, arresting more than a dozen suspected extremists including one of JMB’s regional heads.

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque, who visited the scene, told reporters that these militants had similar black outfits of the Gulshan cafe attackers.
