Relatives told the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper that she felt she needed more medical care. ‘The early facts of this case should cause a great concern for everyone’. Her family told the paper she asked the hospital to return her oxygen tank because it was hard to breathe, but a nurse told her she didn’t need it.

Barbara Dawson was just steps away from the entrance to Calhoun Liberty Hospital when she collapsed.

The state medical examiner ruled 57-year-old Barbara Dawson died from natural causes – a blood clot in her lung.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced it has taken over the investigation into Dawson’s death. The family has retained a lawyer, and the local NAACP chapter held a meeting Tuesday to discuss the matter.

Ruth Attaway, administrator and CEO of the hospital, was quoted by The Tallahassee Democrat as saying that staff did everything they could to save Dawson. According to the authorities, she was reportedly abusive to the staff after they had released the woman.

When police arrived at the jail, the arresting officer opened the door and Dawson, still in handcuffs, collapsed. Attaway said although they could not speak to Dawson’s specific medical conditions, she said blood clots are hard to detect and impossible to treat.

First and foremost, our deepest condolences go out to the family of Ms. Barbara Dawson. The Agency takes very seriously our responsibility to ensure the health and safety of all patients and to hold those health care facilities who fail to do so accountable to the patients they serve.

She was there seeking treatment for breathing difficulties. The medical staff maintains they did everything they could to save her.

Less than two hours later, at 6.24am, she was pronounced dead.

The autopsy report, police report and dashcam footage of the incident have not been released.

Reacting to Dawson’s death, Dale Landry of the Florida chapter of the NAACP told: ‘We strongly believe the death was due to negligence by the police department and hospital’.
