The Belgium worldwide is on the verge of joining the Serie A side ahead of the 2016/17 season, subject to a medical.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti on Friday stated that the Serie A club are in advanced talks to sign the 30-year-old Belgium worldwide. However, he failed to impress during his first two campaigns at the Nou Camp due to a series of injuries.

Liverpool face Barcelona on Saturday in the International Champions Cup.

“Vermaelen is a player that we are following”, Spalleti said.

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen is understood to be on the verge of joining Roma after agreeing personal terms.

Given his constant fitness concerns, Roma have taken something of a gamble in bringing in Vermaelen, but he remains an accomplished and experienced centre-back.

At Roma, he will be reunited with Wojciech Szczesny, with whom he played at Arsenal; the goalkeeper is just starting his second season-long loan at Roma from the Gunners. Barcelona reportedly wanted the option to be mandatory, but the Serie A giants rejected the Catalans’ demands.
