Barclays finishes for Reed, Fowler amplified by Ryder Cup qualifying

If you have an opinion about Patrick Reed, it was likely shaped in large part by that now-infamous interview he did after winning the Cadillac Championship in 2014.

He received a $1.53 million check for winning The Barclays at Bethpage Black, which snapped a almost two-year winless streak and gave him PGA Tour title No. 5.

Larson took the lead on a restart with nine laps remaining and held off Chase Elliott at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday in a duel between two of NASCAR’s up-and-coming standouts.

And he secured a spot on the US team that will try to win back the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine next month.

Patrick Reed came from behind to win The Barclays on Sunday to claim his fifth USPGA Tour title and a spot on the American Ryder Cup team. Despite shooting just 71-70 on Saturday and Sunday, Reed beat Sean O’Hair and Emiliano Grillo by a stroke each, while Jason Day and Adam Scott finished two shots back of the victor in a tie for fourth place. He needed to finish third or better to secure his position after starting the tournament 12th on the list but slumped over the closing stages, dropping three shots in the last four holes to finish joint seventh.

“I don’t think there was a tee shot that I felt comfortable over to be honest”, the Australian said. “And I get to pick him on Sunday night”. I stuck with my game plan and there in my second round, I kind of steered away from the game plan on a couple of the holes and it bit me.

“Every time I was standing over the ball, I couldn’t feel like it was going to be a good shot”.

“I worked hard with my coach the last couple weeks so it shows I am moving in the right direction”.

Top-ranked Jason Day of Australia (69) was two strokes back and tied for fourth with Gary Woodland (69) and world No. 7 Adam Scott of Australia (71). Fowler ended tied for seventh while Sean O’Hair and Emiliano Grillo shared second.

Sung Kang matched the course record with a 64 to move from No. 122 to No. 88.

The field will now be reduced from the top 125 points earners to 100 for the second FedEx Cup play-off event – the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Europe’s automatic nine spots were decided a week ago, and already there are five Ryder Cup rookies in Masters champion Danny Willett, Andy Sullivan, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Chris Wood. He is one of eight automatic qualifiers, joining Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Jimmy Walker, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Brandt Snedeker and Zach Johnson.

“Everyone’s been talking about the Ryder Cup, been talking about, “Oh, you’re in the eighth spot and you’re on the bubble” and all that”, Reed said after his one-shot victory.

“(Hoping for) sweet revenge and hopefully the cup comes back home”.

The Ryder Cup will take place September 30-Oct. We’re not showing up just to make cuts and slide by. From more rough on the 16th, he went into a bunker and took two shots to reach the green, making a double bogey.

Rickie Fowler:: Will he get in?

Fowler started Sunday with the lead. He finished just two shots back of victor, Patrick Reed.

“If I tell you”, he said with a grin, “then it won’t be a surprise”.

“It is awesome”, said Reed, who earned $1.5 million for his first win of 2016.

“I wasnt trying to get a decent finish, ” Fowler said. “It’s amusing, I could be hitting it bad this week, and hitting it great next week and not putting so great”.
