Barkley, Penn State fresh entering bowl game
Smart said he will go directly from Jacksonville to Athens after the game if the Crimson Tide lose to Michigan State.

“I called it the 50,000-mile check up”, he said.
It was certainly the most attention Rahne has ever received as a coach.
On January 2, the Penn State Nittany Lions (7-5) will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face off against the University of Georgia Bulldogs (9-3) in the 71st annual TaxSlayer Bowl at EverBank Field. He’s a guy who did great things for that program. Very, very smart. Very creative. So I would not expect a lot of points in this game.
Further, Rahne has been Hackenberg’s position-coach for two years. Has done a good job with that. Just watching their defense, they have some really good players up front.
Garrity, the family’s third generation to play at Penn State, said his dad is in town and is expected to be at the game. But Saturday could be the first step toward something bigger.
Rahne said he has given some of the Lions, including Hackenberg, a chance to talk about ideas and plays they might like. “I can specifically remember Coach Vandy (Ron Vanderlinden) asking Coach (Bill) O’Brien, ‘Who do you want to catch the punt in place of Von?'” said Garrity.
“Obviously, I want to be an offensive coordinator one day. So this is an important opportunity for me”.
The Nittany Lions are 11th against the pass (174.5 ypg) and will be chasing down a quarterback who might also be making his final collegiate start for a very different reason. There’s not enough time to make dramatic adjustments. “Every play, he takes on double-teams like it’s nothing”. “So yeah, there will be a few things, minor things here and there, that will be in there”.
The way Jeb Blazevich and Jay Rome figure it, tight ends will likely be targeted on at least half of Georgia’s offensive plays during Saturday’s TaxSlayer Bowl. Rahne wants his players to come out fast and aggressive, and with a little “swagger”. “I think the job he did at (Vanderbilt) was second to none, to be honest with you”. “Once he arrived (on campus), his demeanor and his approach and his attitude was he was going to do everything in his power to play as a freshman, and not just play but have an impact”. “He’s a different personality than Coach Donovan”. But no matter what, he’s a great man, a great coach and we all love him, whether he stays or leaves. He was more reserved. Most of the team prefers the hip hop sounds over the usual whistles and barking from the coaches.
He also has prodded the offense to strut a little more, both at practice and in the game.
Rahne has worked with quarterback Christian Hackenberg for two seasons, calling him a skilled passer who has been “a pleasure” to coach.
Offfensive tackle John Theus said he was happy for McClendon. “Everything’s not going to be flawless”. I remember seeing the ball go up, and I honestly can’t remember anything from there.
With the bowl game falling on a Saturday, Penn State was able to run its usual game-week routine leading up to it. And each player donned a new number for the final full practice of the season.
“It kind of gets your mind off the repetitive individual stuff”, tight end Jeb Blazevich said.
Two quirky traditions were observed: The players traded uniform numbers, usually with a buddy; and seniors were literally carried off the field by (with one exception) younger players.
Few players have been through as much uncertainty at Penn State as senior center Angelo Mangiro.
“I was surprised he made it all the way over here!”

“It’s an incredible challenge for our team and for me personally, ” Rahne said. “He’s probably gonna have to get some ice after”.
