RIDGEDALE, Mo. – Woody Austin and Michael Allen shot a 12-under 59 in better-ball play Saturday to take the second-round lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge. The 38-year-old tallied five birdies on the day-up from just three Friday-and he’s starting to find a rhythm of sorts after missing the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in mid-March.

Brendan Steele took advantage of relatively calm conditions at one of his favourite venues to earn a three-shot lead in the second round of the weather-disrupted Texas Open in San Antonio on Friday.

“It’s important for me to remember it’s a long season and I’m going to have, hopefully, a very long career”, he said. “I tend to play well here, and hopefully I can keep it going and have a chance on Sunday”.

Langley had an eagle on the par-five 14th in a round of 68, while Appleby was able to survive a triple bogey on the 10th and dropped shots on the 15th and 18th thanks to seven birdies in his round of 70.

Barnes carded a five-under 67 to move to 11 under, one shot clear of fellow American Brendan Steele, while England’s Luke Donald and American Charley Hoffman on nine under.

Entering Saturday, Hoffman was a PGA Tour-best 38 under at the course dating back to 2010, per Ray, and that level of comfort could provide him with some extra confidence with a title on the line Sunday afternoon.

“I played pretty solid golf, especially my last nine holes”, Donald said. “If you told me 5 under today, I would have taken it before the round”.

However, Barnes will need to be wary of Hoffman-who has thrived at TPC San Antonio over the past six years.

“I can’t figure the last time I probably had two, three birdies in a row”.

The one-time PGA Tour victor, whose solitary title came here at the Texas Open in 2011, had two birdies and as many bogeys in a mixed bag.

“That was cool”, said Malnati, who was in the fairway and signaling to someone at the green to confirm if the ball went into the cup.

But the American got back on track with three birdies in four holes from the 11th, including a superb 30-foot putt for a three at 12, and he got to 12 under with a neat pitch and putt from 90 yards at 17.

“I feel like I hit a couple of loose shots”, said Reed, who was born in San Antonio.

Shot of the day: Mark Wilson finished in style, chipping in for par on the 18th hole.
