The government of San Juan province in Argentina has temporarily suspended operations at Barrick Gold’s Veladero mine following a spillage of processing solution from leach pads.

The Toronto-based gold-mining company, the world’s largest by output, said a pipe carrying solution used to extract gold was hit by a block of ice last Thursday, resulting in “a small quantity of solution” spilling off the leach pad at the mine.

But no solution from the damaged pipe reached any water diversion channels or watercourses, and the impacted area in the leach valley has now been remediated. The company said the incident did not pose any threat to the health of employees, communities or the environment.
