According to NFL.com’s Ian Rappaport, starting quarterback Jay Cutler will miss two to three weeks with a thumb injury on his throwing hand sustained in their season opener against the Houston Texans.

Carson Wentz took some hard hits, showed poise in the pocket and led the Philadelphia Eagles to another victory. The Bears can save as much as $71 million by cutting Cutler before the 2017 season starts.
It’s possible the Bears will run more now with Hoyer playing instead of Cutler, although Fox said he’d like to rely on the run regardless. Cutler was actually hurt in Week One, but he tried to play through it in Week Two, against the Eagles. That apparently was a problem on his final throw when he was intercepted by Philadelphia’s Nigel Bradham with 36 seconds to play in the third quarter. Cutler admitted after the game he had trouble gripping the football.
“I was on a team that 0-2 previous year, too, ” Hoyer said. The Eagles are starting a rookie quarterback for his first career road game and he came in and put up 29 on the Bears defense and left Soldier Field as a convincing victor. If that weren’t enough, Roethlisberger scored two points for the Eagles in that game when he was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone with 8 minutes’ left in the fourth quarter and the Steelers trailing by just 4 points. And now the question becomes whether this will be Cutler’s last season in Chicago. “We started the season without a couple of corners, we’ve got some young guys that have gotten an opportunity that it seems that they’re learning from – I think in some cases have excelled in – so we’ll figure it out”. You could tell last night they were mad at themselves.
Wentz has completed 61 percent of his passes for 468 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers to help the Eagles jump out to a 2-0 record. “I knew my day was done”.

While the Bears added a lot of talent to their revamped defense, they don’t necessarily have a quality replacement on the roster for Trevathan should he have to miss some games. “We’ll just take it day to day and Brian Hoyer stepped in, and I thought did a pretty good job”. While it’s ultimately good news that Cutler is likely to be back sooner rather than later from his thumb injury, it doesn’t mean he should face Dallas in Week 3. The things that you like on that is, especially with the emphasis in today’s game about defenseless players, you’ve got to be careful about those things going into the wall.
