Base-loaded walks lift Padres over Marlins 8

More than a year later, Fernandez is in fine shape but Miami (42-62) has the majors’ second-worst record and has totaled 16 runs while hitting. The Padres defeated the Marlins 8-3 in eleven innings.

“His record speaks for itself, what he’s been able to do here”, interim Miami manager Dan Jennings said.

“We did a pretty good job of taking what they gave us”, Murphy said. He’s 2-1 with a 2.29 ERA against San Diego, but allowed a two-run homer and a grand slam to Jedd Gyorko on May 9 of last season – his final outing before undergoing surgery. Yangervis Solarte and Matt Kemp each had two hits and drove in a run.

Brandon Maurer (7-3) pitched an inning in relief to earn the win. “I’m just proud of her and Alli because it was so cool to see”. “I’m out here on a big league mound, and you’ve got to step it up….” “We’re having fun and the guys are believing”. He also pitched six innings in a 3-2 victory over the Marlins last Sunday. Do I really need to say anymore? “Nothing was hit that hard”. Solarte hit an RBI triple and scored on Kemp’s sacrifice fly. Catcher Derek Norris capped the inning with a two-out double.

“I just had trouble locating the pitches in the zone and that ended up costing me”, Urena said. They are selling as, much like the Padres, their new pieces have not gelled as expected. “What are you going to tell your daughter after you’re all done?”

Joaquin Benoit then retired all three batters he faced in the eighth before Kimbrel finished. Dietrich was charged with an error, helping the Padres extend their lead to 5-0. C Tim Federowicz (right knee) was activated from the 60-day disabled list and was designated for assignment…. “That’s the generation of your whole swing is that turnover (with) your hand and your wrist”. There is no timetable for his return following the original diagnosis of being sidelined for four to six weeks.

Looking to remain unbeaten at home for his career, the right-hander tries to help the lowly Marlins prevent the San Diego Padres from matching a season high with a fifth straight win Sunday.

Marlins: RHP Jose Urena (1-4) benefits from the Marlins’ recent trades as he was recalled from Triple-A and will start Saturday. He booked a flight, which was scheduled to depart at 2 p.m. After sitting on a plane for an hour-and-a-half with no takeoff in sight, Kennedy called pitching coach Darren Balsley and asked whether he could make his scheduled start.
