Baseballer Wilmer Flores in tears after mid-game trade

For three hours, rumors about a megadeal raced across social media. The Mets are a big-budget team being run like their in a small market.

The young 23-year old Flores was seen running out to his position in the top of the eighth-inning with heavy emotions. Wheeler’s medical information had seemed the most likely to scuttle a trade.

The reason is still unclear. Word of the trade made its way into the Mets dugout, where Flores learned he’d be leaving the organization he’d been with since signing as a 16-year-old in 2007. It was an unfortunate situation. Flores was one of the players included in the tweets and internet chatter about the trade. When I came up to hit I heard everybody cheering….

But then things got really weird: After the trade had been confirmed to reporters (including by a “a high-ranking team executive” who spoke to the Times), the deal fell apart. I thought (a trade) was the only reason….

It is typical for players to be pulled once trades are agreed upon in principle.

But what exactly did social media do wrong?

The Giants scored five times in the 7 to blank the Brewers 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon in their series finale in San Francisco.

According to CBS Sports Major League Baseball Insider Jon Heyman, GM Sandy Alderson and owner Jeff Wilpon met with Flores to try to make him feel better following Wednesday’s game. The Mets also have two years of Gomez as well.

Never change, Mets. Never change.

Gomez, 29, was an All-Star in both 2013 and 2014 and a Gold Glove victor in 2013. 266 with eight homers, 43 RBIs and 42 runs in 73 games. Most of the Mets’ center-field innings have gone to Juan Lagares, who has played through multiple injuries, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Milwaukee, on the other hand, is adding a shortstop with plenty of pop – to go with their shortstop with speed to spare (Jean Segura), and they’re gambling that Wheeler can turn into a front-line starter. They have also long valued Flores and envisioned him as a third baseman.

But overall, offense is what the Mets need right now, and this trade does help, especially if Gomez can heat up down the stretch.

Alderson has already apologized to Flores.

Padres: RHP Andrew Cashner (4-10) is set to start while trade rumors swirl ahead of the trade deadline. In doing so, he has gotten pieces that haven’t cost the Mets too much money nor prospects.
