Bastian Schweinsteiger charged with violent conduct

Winston Reid and Slaven Bilic were adamant Manchester United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger should have got his marching orders for a flying elbow.

He has until 12pm on Thursday 10 December 2015 to reply to the charge.

Schweinsteiger will be available for the Wolfsburg but should he be found guilty of misconduct against Winston Reid, he will be reprimanded and would miss three English domestic league or cup games.

Referee Mark Clattenburg spoke with the two players after their coming together in the second half, but claims he didn’t see the incident at the time. For an FA charge to follow the decision by the panel must be unanimous, with Schweinsteiger subsequently slapped with an act of violent conduct.

Following his summer move from Bayern Munich, Schweinsteiger is one of just three players, along with Juan Mata and Chris Smalling, to feature in all 15 of the club’s Premier League games so far this season.

Reid and the Germany captain challenged in the West Ham penalty area as United looked to deliver a set piece from a risky position, although as with many of their chances, it was wasted. Though the Guardian phrase it slightly differently, in that they say United will start talks with Van Gaal in the new year over what’s going to happen.

“He knows what he’s done – he’s elbowed me in the face”, Reid said afterwards. I’m not sure he’d be a fan of that.

Reid was in no doubt what action the referee should have taken, saying: “It was a red card”. It was a moment of madness.

Had the referee seen the incident, or any of his assistants, it would have been a certain red for the Manchester United midfielder.
