The time frame of just 4 matches in the new chapter of his glittering managerial career is all Jose Mourinho needed to make an impact at his new club.

Two captains, two legends, two generally nice blokes; Bastian Schweinsteiger and Robbie Keane both said farewell to global duty on Wednesday night.

“I played in the semi-finals of the European Championship as part of the world champions’ team, and I believe in my ability and dream of helping United”, said the German midfielder.

It seems a long, long time since Schweinsteiger was lifting the World Cup trophy in Brazil after Germany’s extra-time win over Argentina.

However, the United boss today named Schweinsteiger as one of his 17 non-home based players for the coming season.

The 31-year-old midfielder has been frozen out of the first team squad by Jose Mourinho, and the Manchester United manager sees little possibility of the midfielder playing again for the Red Devils this season. “I will definitely not give up playing football”, the 32-year-old Schweinsteiger told reporters in Dusseldorf.

Schweinsteiger played his final match for Germany in a friendly against Finland on Wednesday evening.

“Of course we will miss him”.

“Let’s wait and see what happens in September, October”, he added. “And I would love all of the players to go because it would mean that everybody is being selected for their national teams”. “But America is naturally an option”. United’s willingness to financially support Sporting’s recruitment of Schweinsteiger’s reflected an urgency to move him out of the club before the summer window closes tomorrow.

“I’m really looking forward to this last game now”. I don’t think of planning ahead, I like to live and enjoy the moment, ” Schweinsteiger said.
