Bastian Schweinsteiger had his farewell last night too

MORE: Get TREBLE the odds on any sports bet. “What I can say for certain is that without you, mine and our journeys would not have been possible”. The Manchester United and Germany midfielder announced his retirement from worldwide competition on July 29th; meaning the 2016 European Championship semi-final versus France was in fact the end of the line for the Captain of Die Mannschaft. He would earn a fraction of that amount at Sporting and even though Manchester United have offered to pay a portion of his salary Schweinsteiger would still earn much less than he does now.

“I’m so happy that I was able to make it to 120 games for Germany”, said Schweinsteiger.

But Schweinsteiger is standing his ground and has turned down a move to Portuguese side Sporting, reports the Daily Record.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has remarked that he still “dreams” of running out at Old Trafford, despite being snubbed by the club in recent weeks.

“I have had conversations (with the club) and I have no problem with Jose Mourinho, he has explained the situation to me from his perspective”.

“I haven’t played a game yet (this season), so I don’t know how the lungs will hold up”.

“We’ve got to wait and see how things go in September and October, but there is respect between us and that’s important for me”, told Schweinsteiger. It’s a respectful dialogue. And on Friday, the Schweinsteiger-to-America train picked up steam when Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl reported that the Chicago Fire are interested in the 32-year-old midfielder.

“I love football still too much and that means being on the field, playing, and that is what I am thinking about”.

“I played in the semi-finals of the European Championship as part of the world champions’ team, and I believe in my ability and dream of helping United”, said the German midfielder. I could still help United if given the chance.

But while others transferred out of Old Trafford, Schweinsteiger insisted on staying. How about American Major League Soccer?

Bayern Munich’s moral outrage did not extend to a practical offer in the summer transfer window and MLS has been touted as a likely destination in January.
