Bastian Schweinsteiger will appeal his FA charge for violent conduct.

Referee Mark Clattenburg spoke to both players over their jostling for position at a free kick, but did not appear to spot Schweinsteiger’s action.

The Manchester United star was charged on Monday after the incident was missed by the officials in the goalless draw and is facing a three-match suspension.

Schweinsteiger had until 12:00 GMT on Thursday to respond to the charge.

The coming together took place during some tight marking preceding a free-kick on the edge of the West Ham penalty area just before half-time. “It was a red card”, the West Ham defender said.

Reid insisted on Saturday that the elbow was intentional. “He deserved to be sent off, but the referee told me he didn’t see it. Fair enough, I believe it. It was an elbow”.

“If you see our matches, we always create good chances to score and of course, it’s a mix of everything; sometimes it’s the build-up pass, sometimes the final pass, and sometimes you need a little bit of luck”.

Reid added: “It was a red card”. A straight red without any doubts.

“He played an important role and I think Van Gaal is psychologically very smart, trying to keep his players on their toes”.
