‘Batman v Superman’ flies high at top of box office

It was the sound of the second weekend box office of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. A normal drop off is in the range of 33 %. It’s hard to see the news as a major problem though when you consider that the film has already earned over $682 million worldwide.

Warner Bros. will still make money off the film, but my suggestion is that the studio should reconsider changing the formula for the upcoming Justice League movie.

Superman (Henry Cavill) finds fans overseas in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”. Zootopia, while never as massive an opener, has sustained smaller drop-offs and consistently overperformed compared to box office pundit predictions. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” also stays at No. 3 with approximately $11.1 million.

Faith-based titles rounded out the Top 5, as newcomer God’s Not Dead 2 landed at No. 4 with $8.1 million. But as was feared when it was plagued by overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and a low Cinemascore from opening weekend audiences, the film isn’t getting the kinds of repeat viewings that other major blockbusters get on their way toward the billion dollar club. Sucker Punch (which had a much smaller opening than BvS) went up against Source Code, Insidious, and Hop in its second weekend. Fantastic Four had Straight Outta Compton and Man From U.N.C.L.E. in its. God’s Not Dead was buddied up with fellow religious fare Miracles from Heaven at No. 5 with $7.6 million.

In second place, Zootopia dropped just 17% in its fifth weekend to earn $20 million.

WB shelled out a reported $250 million in production costs (with some rumors hinting the total was closer to $400 million) and an additional $150 million in marketing for Zack Snyder’s superhero team up.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 dipped by 72% – from $169.2 million to $47.4 million – in its first two weekends.

On the limited release front, Paramount’s “Everybody Wants Some!!” opened Wednesday in NY and Los Angeles, and six other markets Friday. In just four theaters, the film written and directed by (and starring) Don Cheadle pulled in $122,751 in just four theaters for a very strong per theater average of $30,688.
