‘Batman v Superman’ signals a new dawn for DC Comics

Following lukewarm reception from movie critics, the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice team is encouraging moviegoers to put aside the critical response and to see the film for themselves before dismissing it. But expect to see much more of them in the years ahead. The $250 million movie begins rolling out in North America Thursday night in roughly 3,800 theaters before expanding into more than 4,000 locations Friday morning, the beginning of Easter weekend.

“Same night, Zack called me and said ‘Well, I’m not sure if you have it in Israel but did you ever hear about Wonder Woman?'”.

Perhaps sensing their firepower wasn’t all-powerful, Warner Bros. delayed the film, originally slated for last July, to March, a less chest-thumping but also less competitive debut than the middle of the summer.

Touted to be a face-off between Batman and Superman, the plot rambles off onto an incongruous tale that pivots on a flimsy ground.

Snyder, who will direct “Justice League”, slated for a 2017 release, said that he doesn’t “know how else to do it 100 percent, so it is what it is”. Such an approach has produced the most revered superhero films of all – Nolan’s acclaimed “Dark Knight” series – but Snyder’s more bombastic style has been far more divisive.

THE headline act may be the Caped Crusader versus the Man of Steel but the real test will be whether these DC comic book characters can match the box office might of Marvel’s all-conquering superheroes.

“I know that [director Zack Snyder] doesn’t make movies and none of us are making the movies for the critics, so to speak”. It’s possible that she and the suits at Warner Bros. are trying to head off any controversy, a la the criticisms of Bryce Dallas Howard’s Jurassic World character running from a T-Rex in high heels.
