Baton Rouge Gunman Left Behind a Manifesto

Bossier and Caddo deputies will be supplementing East Baton Rouge deputies who have been working around-the-clock following protests and also the line-of-duty deaths of an EBRPSO deputy and two Baton Rouge police officers.

Across this city, shocked residents gathered Tuesday in churches, at community vigils and a motorcycle rally to offer support for the law enforcement community and the three officers who were slain in an ambush by a gunman. After firing the fatal shots and wounding three other officers, Long was killed by police.

She brought a letter she said he received from the Department of Veterans Affairs denying her son’s request for treatment of PTSD in 2013 on grounds that the disorder wasn’t related to his military service.

He served one tour in Iraq before being honorably discharged. Although he never saw combat, there was “shooting all around” where he was stationed, his mother said.

“Officer Gerald’s wife wanted his military background represented as well as his family”, Ganem, a former police officer, said in a telephone interview as he drove to Baton Rouge.

Garafola’s family wanted a collage of family photos inside, Ganem said. “He actually felt that was the only thing he could do to help the situation”.

“At that point, I knew I needed to do something for those officers”, Ganem said.

In it, Long said he expected people who knew him wouldn’t believe he would commit “such horrendous acts of violence”.
