Police-community relations in Baton Rouge have been especially tense since the death of 37-year-old Alton Sterling, a black man killed by white officers July 5 after a scuffle at a convenience store.

Three police officers were killed, and several others injured on Sunday in a shooting incident in Baton Rouge, the capital city of the US state of Louisiana.

“It’s insane. … I understand some people feel like enough is enough with, you know, the black community being shot”, said Gardner, an African-American.

“I’m affiliated with the spirit of justice, nothing more, nothing less”.

“I can’t explain what brought us here”, she said.

“We as a nation have to be loud and clear that nothing justifies violence on law enforcement”, Obama said in televised remarks from the the White House. “We basically have a target on our back”, she said.

Jackson had been with the police department for ten years.

The shooting took place along a highway near police headquarters around 8.40am (1340 GMT, 9.40pm Malaysia), after officers responded to a call about a man carrying a rifle.

The attack began at a gas station on Airline Highway.

Public records show Long had lived in Kansas City and Grandview, Missouri, as well as San Diego and Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The gunman was later revealed to be a former Marine named Gavin Long, who also wounded three other policemen at the scene, one critically.

Killed yesterday were Baton Rouge police officers Montrell Jackson, 32, and Matthew Gerald, 41, and East Baton Rouge Deputy Sheriff Brad Garafola, 45. All three men had families.

“I said that killer would not be the last person who tries to make us turn on each other”.

The unnamed official familiar with the investigation who identified Long did not have any other details about him.

Long was a black male from Kansas City, Missouri, who carried out the attack on his 29th birthday.

One of the suspects is dead.

James said he knows Jackson and his family personally and spoke to the family earlier Sunday. The National Association of Police Organizations said after the Dallas shooting that America was in the midst of a war on law enforcement officers. I’m working in these streets so any protestors, officers, friends, family, or whoever, if you see me and need a hug or want to say a prayer. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

Thousands of people have protested Sterling’s death, and Baton Rouge police arrested more than 200 demonstrators.

Reports earlier on Sunday indicated that shots had been fired at the scene before police arrived, indicating that officers may have been lured into some sort of trap.
