Heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists yesterday attempted to storm the Air Force base in Pathankot, triggering a day-long gunbattle in which three security men and all the five infiltrators were killed.
“All the assets of the air base, including personnel and families, have been secured and are safe”, he said.
The meeting was called at short notice, as it became clear that the Pathankot operations were not over and there were higher casualties among security forces.
The attack, launched early Saturday, has wounded eight air force troops and about 10 National Security Guard members, five of them in an explosion on Sunday morning during the Indian counterattack, Interior Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi reported at a press conference. Seventeen security personnel were also injured.
Although officials are trying to underline that damage at the airbase was minimized, questions are being raised over how the gunmen managed to enter the military facility despite intelligence alerts about a possible terror attack.
Throughout the day choppers kept flying over the air force station to provide aerial support to the ground troops engaged in the operation. A senior army officer was killed and four others were Injured in the blast.
According to reports, the holed up militants were discovered in the forested area on the backside of the air base from where they are reported to have entered.
Three Defence Security Corps (DSC) personnel also succumbed to injuries in the hospital here during the intervening 2nd/3rd Dec night.

Apart from extra paramilitary forces, National Security Guard (NSG) and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team have been deployed at crucial places to tackle any suicide attack or hostage-like situation in the National Capital.
The violence follows Indian Prime Minister Modi’s surprise 25 December visit to Pakistan, where he met with his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif – a trip that marked a significant thaw in the mostly tense relations between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
