Bay Area Gives Up Olympic Dream, Defers to Los Angeles
So, it’s not surprising that some observers, believing Toronto has aced the audition, are turning their sights to a sixth bid for the holy grail of roving sports competitions – the Olympics.

She says the meeting was “part of the consultation and due diligence the mayor committed to undertake” before ruling on the possibility of a bid. The U.S. hasn’t hosted the Summer Olympics since 1996, when they were held in Atlanta.
A formal bid would have to be sent in a letter as an expression of interest to the worldwide Olympic Committee.
Because there won’t be as many large projects, chairman Larry Probst feels a Los Angeles bid is more in line with the less-extravagant Olympic model IOC President Thomas Bach outlined in his recently released Agenda 2020 reforms.
At least two other cities that weren’t finalists also reached out to the USOC after Boston pulled out.
Now, there are indeed some reasons to hope than an L.A. games could avoid some of the worst of the red ink that has befallen other Olympics: The city does have a lot of existing venues, for starters.
“It’s clear that the USOC is already in deep discussions with Los Angeles about a bid from that city for 2024″, Winnicker added in an email to this newspaper.
“This victory for the people of Boston is the result of tireless work of numerous activists and residents across the city, region and state speaking up against this anti-democratic land grab”, said the statement.
As happened in Boston, it simply becomes a massive political liability. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti reportedly told the Los Angeles Times that his city could host the massive 17-day sporting event for $4.1 billion.
“I think that’s a non-issue in the case of Los Angeles“.
An Olympic bid from the city would utilize the improved infrastructure, new venues created for the Pan Ams and the experience gained from hosting a major worldwide event. He said he wants to wait until numbers are in on how the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games affected the city.

If Los Angeles is chosen as America’s bidder, it could be up against potential foreign bidders such as Rome; Nairobi, Kenya; Casablanca, Morocco; Johannesburg and Durban, South Africa; Doha, Qatar; Melbourne, Australia; Paris; Hamburg, Germany; and St. Petersburg, Russia.
