But Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller struck after the break to send the game into extra time, and Juve’s race was run when Thiago Alcantara and Kingsley Coman earned Bayern a 4-2 win.

Thiago Alcantara and Coman then netted in extra time to ensure that Bayern will be in Friday’s quarter final draw.

The German giants found themselves two goals down in the tie with just over 15 minutes remaining but rallied to force the contest into extra-time before scoring twice in the additional 30 minutes. The half ended 2-0 in favour of Juventus on the night.

Gianluigi Buffon was proud of his Juventus team-mates following their last-gasp Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich and believes the Bianconeri are still on a path to winning the tournament.

While Juventus’ approach was on point, Bayern were part of their own downfall with the defending as David Alaba failed to clear the ball once it was played over the top towards Stephan Lichtsteiner from Alvaro Morata.

Bayern’s perseverance paid off in the first minute of added time. “But we said we can make it and we kept our cool”. But then from the 70th minute on everything changed.

With Bayern besieging the Italians’ goal, Douglas Costa sent a cross from the right corner and Lewandowski headed home at the far post from close range to put Bayern back into the match. An Arjen Robben wonder goal made it 2-0 before Paulo Dybala and Stefano Sturaro – two second-half substitutes – both scoring to make it 2-2 at the end of full time. “We are going out with our heads held high”.
