Bayern started well and it required a superb tackle from Ricardo Rodriguez to thwart Thomas Muller as he looked to pull the trigger eight yards out.

“The first goal made things easier for us, but in addition Manuel Neuer held things up well”.

Both sides had their chances as Wolfsburg ‘keeper Koen Casteels, who had flu in midweek, denied Lewandowski and Mueller before Coman beat him.

The hosts could have snatched the advantage just before the interval, but Marcel Schafer’s first-time half-volley flew wide of the far post. Franck Ribéry came on 11 minutes into the second half for Arjen Robben and the French global played a role in both of Bayern’s goals.

On Sunday evening, Dortmund host rejuvented strugglers Hoffenheim. The ball fell kindly to Coman, who slotted it home from close range in the 66th. The second goal killed off any lingering hopes Wolfsburg had of taking anything out of the game. Pizarro is fifth-highest Bundesliga scorer of all-time. Although achievable if Bayern truly set their minds to it, the Champions League is likely to take precedence once the league is mathematically beyond Dortmund’s reach.

Elsewhere, bottom side Hanover gained ground in the relegation battle with a shock 2-1 win at Stuttgart after an eight-match losing streak.

Australia goalkeeper Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute for Stuttgart.

Werder didn’t help its cause by failing to win at home against promoted Darmstadt, which led 2-1 on goals from Sandro Wagner’s penalty and Aytac Sulu before Pizarro struck in the 89th. Since then, Pep Guardiola’s side have recorded an impressive 2-2 draw away to Juventus in the Champions League, and Guardiola will be confident of extending his team’s unbeaten run to seven games this Saturday.
