McCaw said in a statement he was stepping down because it would be help Baylor promote “unity, healing and restoration”.
Baylor’s board of regents – who have remained reticent to talk about specifics of their decisions – responded to McCaw’s decision Monday evening.
Before tabbing Grobe as the interim head coach, Baylor was believed to be leaning toward hiring defensive coordinator Phil Bennett for the position.

He is an active member of the American Football Coaches Association, headquartered in Waco, and served eight years as chair of the organization’s ethics committee.
Baylor announced Monday evening that McCaw has said he is resigning his position of Vice President and Director of Athletics, a role he has held since September 2003.

His coaching career took him to his hometown university of Marshall and then to the Air Force Academy, where he worked for Hall of Fame coach Fisher DeBerry.
The Huntington, West Virginia native resigned as Wake Forest’s head coach at the end of the 2013 season following a fifth consecutive losing season.
Change is coming fast and furious to Baylor.
“As a coach, winning is important”.
In 1995 he took over a program that had not won more than four games in a single season the previous 12 years. Grobe also has the history of being a strong disciplinarian, so the hire makes ideal sense given the allegations at Baylor.
Briles had eight years left on his contract when he was let go on May 26 amid detailed and damning findings that revealed the football program turned a cold shoulder to alleged victims of sexual assault and violence.
