Baylor Campus Reaction: Fallout Over Sexual Assault Scandal Begins

Spokeswoman Dorie Nolt said Thursday that all students should be protected from sexual violence or sexual harassment on campus. Administrators were not given enough training on how to evaluate domestic violence, stalking or the role of alcohol in a sexual assault case. Defensive end Sam Ukwuachu, a transfer from Boise State, was also convicted of sexual assault and defensive end Shawn Oakman is now being investigated for sexual assault.

“In some cases”, the Pepper report reads, “football coaches and staff had inappropriate involvement in disciplinary and criminal matters or engaged in improper conduct that reinforced an overall perception that football was above the rules, and that there was no culture of accountability for misconduct”.

Is Briles the only Baylor official who will lose his job?

Outgoing Baylor University President Ken Starr has apologized to victims of sexual violence who were not treated with the care, concern and support they deserve.

The board of regents announced it had begun the process to fire Briles.

Mr. Starr, while being relieved of the day-to-day operational duties that come with the presidency, agreed “in principle” to remain as chancellor, a position that includes fund-raising and other external functions that he has held along with the presidency since 2013.

He insisted he didn’t learn about the problems until fall 2015 and launched investigations as soon as he did.

Briles has turned the Baylor football program around since becoming head coach in 2008.

It’s much more socially acceptable to make up stories about Haven Monahan and the Duke lacrosse team menace.

Hernandez, of Yorba Linda, California, says she is pressing on with her federal lawsuit against the school.

Hernandez says Baylor ignored her cries for help after being raped in 2012 during her freshman year.

Laura Seay (‘see), a 2000 graduate of the Waco, Texas, school, said Thursday that the administration too often has opted to give offenders a second chance and not served as an advocate for victims.

Subsequent news reports have found several other accusations of sexual assault by Baylor athletes, including one against two players that Baylor did not investigate for more than two years.

Seay, an assistant professor of government at Colby College in ME, helped draft a critical letter to Baylor regents this year that received more than 1,000 signatures.

It was Starr who initiated the Pepper Hamilton review that would lead to his downfall, ordering it a year ago after former football player Sam Ukwuachu was convicted of sexually assaulting a female soccer player.

“In one instance”, the report added, “those actions constituted retaliation against a complainant for reporting sexual assault”.

Pepper Hamilton also produced a 10-page document containing recommendations for the university’s implementations of Title IX and improved response to sexual violence on campus.

They have fired Art Briles and fired some others, but they won’t say who and how many.

Baylor University fired football coach Art Briles on Thursday, multiple media outlets reported. This led to the university beginning the process of cleaning house and getting rid of Briles, School President Ken Starr and placing Athletic Director Ian McCaw on probation.

The review by Philadelphia-based law firm Pepper Hamilton found systemic failures that extended well beyond the football program, though it was the cases involving players that brought the issue front and center.
