Baylor’s Grobe unaware of Oakman with 16th-ranked Bears

His son, Kendal, remains on staff as offensive coordinator. But Grobe, who took over the program in May when former coach Art Briles was dismissed in relation to the school’s sexual assault scandal involving football players, is quick to acknowledge the Cowboys (2-1) will test his team in ways his players have yet to experience this season. Oakman was indicted and charged with sexual assault earlier this year, after he’d left the team.

Police in Waco arrested Oakman in April after a Baylor graduate student accused him of sexually assaulting her at his apartment on April 3.

On Monday, Baylor coach Jim Grobe was asked about allowing Oakman, who has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of second-degree felony sexual assault in Waco, in the locker room, and Grobe had a rather fantastic answer. “I wouldn’t be able to recognize him if he walked into the door right now”. He made his way there after the game but did not address the team. There were a lot of people around at the end of the game. Afterwards, Oakman was seen walking into the locker room to catch up with his former teammates. “Oakman is not permitted in Baylor-owned facilities nor in the locker room at future away games”.

Baylor also addressed the incident in a statement on Monday evening.

Oakman was with the Baylor football program for four years after transferring from Penn State University in 2012.

A McLennan County grand jury in July returned an indictment against Oakman, who had 17 1/2 sacks in three seasons with the Bears.

Needless to say, if Grobes was not aware of who Oakman was or what he looked like before the game, he’s aware now.

“He’s a great guy, just in a bad situation”, Baylor quarterback Seth Russell told the Dallas Morning News on Monday. “We’re going to love him just as much as anybody else”.

Baylor players who were asked about Oakman had no comment on what he said to them.

“That’s more of a personal deal, “what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room” type of deal”.
