Baylor struggles early at home vs Texas

Baylor players came off their bench to join the scuffle but it did not escalate.

That appears to be defensive back Jermaine Roberts, who is absolutely jonesing for a scrap, so long as that person comes at him first.

Baylor Bears players and staff along with Texas Longhorns players clear the benches in the first half.

Texas head coach Charlie Strong reacts to play during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Baylor Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, in Waco, Texas. Quarterback Jerrod Heard and the Longhorns are coming off a three point loss to Texas Tech, and now aim for the upset on the road. This game is unbelievable and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman announced Saturday that he plans to leave the school after the season and enter the National Football League draft.

“We just have to try to salvage the year by going to a bowl game and winning the bowl game”, Baylor coach Art Briles said.

Texas managed to stop the barrage just in the nick of time, though. But Rose increased Texas’ lead when he booted a 53-yard field goal with 2:01 left in the second quarter.

“[This win] puts the icing on the cake for a season that we know we could’ve done better”, sophomore defensive end Naashon Hughes said.

Baylor left tackle Spencer Drango and some of his teammates were going to help quarterback Lynx Hawthorne get up along the Texas sideline when he made the tackle after throwing an interception.

Coleman, a redshirt junior, still had a season of eligibility remaining. It worked to the tune of more than 230 rushing yards and 17-straight points, and it could have had even more had we not fumbled away our chance on the last real drive of the game.

But if UT holds on, Oklahoma State would get the Sugar Bowl berth on the strength of the Big 12’s tiebreaker and a head-to-head victory over TCU.

Texas has looked outstanding in flashes this season.

Anthony Wheeler’s recovery at the Baylor 18 led to Swoopes’ 9-yard keeper for a 17-0 lead.

The only flag thrown was for unsportsmanlike conduct on Texas safety Kevin Vaccaro, who came off the bench and shoved Hawthorne in the back while he was down. Several 5-7 teams will be receiving special bowl invitations this year, but Texas is not expected to receive one because its graduation rates aren’t as high as other 5-7 candidates.
