Chinese and Asian films were well represented in the top 100 poll of 177 critics from 36 countries, which had been commissioned by the editors of BBC Culture. Some favorite American directors are surprisingly underrepresented: the list includes only one film each from Martin Scorsese (Wolf of Wall Street), Quentin Tarantino (Inglorious Basterds), and Steven Spielberg (the aforementioned A.I.), and none by David O. Russell or Woody Allen.
It stars Watts as an aspiring actress who moves to Los Angeles and befriends an amnesic woman who has been hiding in her aunt’s apartment. The film earned Lynch an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, but he lost out to Ron Howard for A Beautiful Mind.
“We hope that this list will spark discussion and debate, not just among critics and film aficionados, but among everyone who enjoys movies and has an opinion about what makes a good one”.
Two Ang Lee films “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Brokeback Mountain” made the list, as did three by Christopher Nolan “The Dark Knight”, “Memento” and “Inception”.
“They don’t make “em like they used to”.
