BBC ridiculed over stolen Grand Theft Auto credit

The story behind Grand Theft Auto got the BBC treatment last night, as Daniel Radcliffe starred in The Gamechangers.

But despite the drama stating that it had been made without Rockstar’s authorization, the company made its feelings known quickly, and clearly.

It told of the battle between Rockstar Games co-founder Sam Houser, played by Radcliffe, and a Christian lawyer called Jack Thompson who believes the game is responsible for encouraging US teenager Devin Moore to steal a car and kill three police officers.

That Rockstar isn’t best pleased with the docudrama comes as no surprise. “It is our obligation to protect our intellectual property, and unfortunately in this case litigation was necessary”.

It aims to take viewers behind the scenes of video game Grand Theft Auto, hailed by some as the greatest British coding success since Bletchley Park.

Another wrote: “Anyone who wants to know what game development is REALLY like, don’t watch The Game Changers. Going very well”. Ex-DMA Design staff (the original creators of the GTA series) and other developers were critical of the movie.

While reaction to the show has certainly been mixed, the show does at least draw on an interesting, or at least controversial period in GTA’s history. The company ended up having no involvement with the drama.
