Jon-Allan Butterworth, 30, won gold in the C1-5 mixed team sprint with team mates Jody Cundy and Louis Rolfe in what looks set to become Britain’s best Paralympic day in Rio yet. “This time two years ago I was at home, about to go into hospital to get my MS diagnosis”, she said. “My legs were knackered from yesterday”. I’m so glad to have done it just to show other people with multiple sclerosis and other conditions that you can do awesome things. I might not be able to do one of the sports, let alone two. “I knew on my day I’d be good enough to beat anyone and I’ve done it”. The 23-year-old finished in a time of 2:24.90, more than five seconds clear of Canadian Aurelie Rivard.

Stilwell, who’s also a member of the Legislative Assembly in B.C. – she’s the B.C. minister of social development – is only the second female Paralympic athlete to have ever won gold in two separate summer sport events.

Meanwhile China maintained her lead on the overall medals table with 41gold, 33silver and 24bronze while Britain with 24 gold is second, Ukraine is third with 19 gold and U.S. remains fourth with 13 gold.

Earlier, Andy Lewis took the gold in the PT2 triathlon and Sabrina Fortune took bronze in the F20 shot put.

She clinched the gold medal with an astonishing throw of 8.4m in her fourth attempt.

Swimmer Sophie Pascoe has won gold with a world record time in the women’s 200 metre Individual Medley SM10 event at Rio.
