BCCI appoint Anil Kumble as India coach for one year

Ganguly, who along with contemporaries Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman is shouldering responsibilities for the selection of the head coach of the Indian cricket team, told reporters that he had contemplated taking up the coaching job about three years ago.

The 45-year-old is now the chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee and previously has served as the head of the BCCI’s technical committee.

Though the BCCI has kept the names of 21 short-listed applicants a secret, the likes of Ravi Shastri, former India Team Director, and Sandeep Patil, current chairman of selectors, have confirmed that they have applied for the post. He replaces Duncan Fletcher as the Zimbabwean finished his term following the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia, where India lost to Australia in the semi-final. They have gone through the process, interviewed and recommended few names.

“It was also a good learning experience for me as the panel wanted to know exactly how I would achieve the objective of [helping] India become the No. 1 team in all forms”, Amre said.

Kumble’s first assignment will be the upcoming four-match Test series in the West Indies, which begins next month.

Announcing the decision following the Working Committee meeting of the BCCI in Dharamsala on Thursday, Board Secretary Anurag Thakur said: “BCCI has been very transparent”. “It was not about Indian or foreign coach”.

The Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) on Wednesday appointed Anil Kumble as the new coach of the Indian cricket team. I think we have used the services of best players who have served Indian cricket.

The BCCI said that given to his huge knowledge and experience, it confident that Kumble would take Indian cricket forward and contribute to its growth and success.

According to the BCCI, which advertised for the post earlier this month, candidates should have coached at the global or first-class level. He was handed India’s Test captaincy in 2007. I thank the BCCI and the cricket advisory committee for showing faith in me.

Kumble’s global cricket career spans 18 years.
