Of his 62 wickets, 31 came in the four-match Test series against South Africa, where his performance ensured India swept the series 3-0.
Stuart Broad ends the year perched at the number three spot in the ICC Test bowler’s rankings with Pakistan’s Yasir Shah and England’s James Anderson behind him in the fourth and the fifth places respectively.
Acknowledging the fine achievements of R Ashwin, BCCI Secretary, Anurag Thakur said, “It is a testimony to Ashwin’s incredible skills and form that he has become the first Indian bowler to lead the ICC’s Test Rankings since 1973”.
Such is the log-jam at the top of the batting rankings, Smith, De Villiers, Root and David Warner all had the chance to overtake Williamson and finish the year as No.1. “The former India captain was a master at his craft and I am very humbled to follow in his footsteps”.
Ashwin also ranks 10th in the ICC ODI Bowler rankings, and 5th in the Twenty20 Bowler rankings. Ajinkya Rahane, at 11, is the best ranked Indian batsman with Test captain Virat Kohli at number 15. Ashwin took 62 wickets in nine Tests this year, at an average of just over 17.
