“Be the Bigger Person”: Republicans Denounce Trump’s Attacks on Khan Family

The #CanYouHearUsNow campaign launched at 10am EST (12am AEST Tuesday), with Muslim women – including activists, lawyers, doctors, and academics – speaking out in defiance of Trump’s comment.

Trump is refusing to back down, complaining anew that he had been “viciously attacked” by the Khans.

Gov. Greg Abbott is coming to the defense of a fallen Muslim soldier’s family, which has been under attack from Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. “While our Party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us”.

But the parents of Captain Humayun Khan, who is also a UVA graduate, now say they would like to step away from the public feud.

Democratic President Barack Obama chimed in, too, addressing the Disabled American Veterans in Atlanta.

Trump’s response has prompted outcry from fellow Republicans, who have praised so-called “Gold Star families” – those who have lost loved ones in war. “You think it’s a good idea?”

He rose to national attention again last week, when his parents, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, appeared at the Democratic National Convention. “I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures”, he said, while also suggesting Ghazala Khan might not have been allowed to speak while she was on stage at the DNC.

Khizr Khan sharply criticized Trump during the Democratic National Convention. Trump’s campaign manager, Paul Manafort, said he sympathizes with the Khan family but that their loss is not the issue at hand.

“His son died 12 years ago”, Trump added. “Hillary voted for the Iraq war, not me”.

Khizr Khan also explained why he chose to pull out a small copy of the USA constitution during his convention speech. “Donald Trump, you are asking Americans to trust you with their future”. Mac Thornberry of Clarendon, said in a prepared statement that he is “dismayed at the attacks Khizr and Ghazala Khan have endured after they spoke about their son’s service and sacrifice”.

But as with other Republicans, Rubio’s repudiation of Trump’s comments came without him withdrawing support for the Republican nominee’s White House bid.

“In recent days, Donald Trump disparaged a fallen soldier’s family”, McCain said.

Trump advisers have spent months trying to help the political novice do just that. “She was standing there, she had nothing to say, she probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say”.

“Offering Donald Trump political advice is not the same thing as rebuking his awful comments about a war hero’s family”, Hayden said.

Trump, Limbaugh said, is not an ideological person. After winning the primary, he spent days criticizing a USA district court judge’s Mexican heritage.

“Because they were American, he was willing to sacrifice his life for them”, Dowell said.

Trump had criticized Khan’s speech and subsequent TV appearances via Twitter, but later followed up saying that “story is not about Mr. Khan. but rather RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM and the U.S. Get smart!” “His sacrifice – and that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan – should always be honored”.

Trump responded in an interview with ABC’s “This Week”, saying: “She had nothing to say”.
